While it's true that, compared to making women's hats, men's millinery features a more limited color palette and a more narrowly defined menu of shapes, the specificity of techniques and demand for quality posed a challenge that appealed to Gaskins. I went home and immediately Googled and found a course on hat-making in Portland, Oregon, and signed up immediately." I had never contemplated hats in my life. "In September of 2009, I went to see 'Coco Before Chanel' at the Belcourt," she says. The creativity appealed to Gaskins, who previously made stained glass windows and owned a glass and gift shop in Hendersonville. "It could be anything that constitutes hats for women." "You could put a kitchen sink on top of your hat," says Gigi Gaskins, a milliner and owner of HatWRKS on Eighth Avenue.
